With the Metaroom Scan App, you can easily capture complex ceilings—including sloped surfaces, recessed lighting features, and ceiling-mounted elements. To enhance precision and details in your 3D model, you would need to add auxiliary surfaces using the AI-assisted 3D object creation tools in the Metaroom Workspace after scanning.
Step-by-step guide to scanning a complex ceiling
Before scanning a ceiling with complex geometry, it’s helpful to prepare by taking note of areas that may require extra detail. These might include sloped or vaulted areas, recessed sections, exposed beams, or ceiling installations (e.g., lights, detectors, vents). During the scanning, take Snapshots of these areas to be able reconstruct it afterwards in the Metaroom Workspace.
Follow these steps to scan a complex ceiling:
- Start a new scan section by tapping “Add Scan”.
- Begin by scanning the walls and floor first, it provides crucial context for accurate ceiling reconstruction.
- Slowly tilt your device upward and continue scanning the ceiling area, making sure to cover all visible features.
- Move steadily through the room, keeping the camera stable and aimed at different ceiling angles as needed.
- If there are any ceiling-mounted fixtures or architectural details, slow down and take Snapshots of those features. Just hold “Snapshot” button for 1-2 seconds to capture Snapshot. Try to capture them from a different perspective, which gives you more data to work with in the Metaroom Workspace.
- When finished, tap “Finish Section” to complete the scan of the room.
- To continue scanning other rooms or floors, tap “Add Section”.
- If you’ve finished scanning the entire space, tap “Finish Scan”.
- Well done! Your scan will now upload to the Metaroom’s cloud. Please keep the app open until the upload is complete. Upload time depends on your scan size and internet speed.
- Once uploaded, your 3D model will be available from:
• Metaroom Scan App → Synced Scans;
• Metaroom Workspace → Projects.
Important Note: The AI may not automatically capture every ceiling element in detail. To ensure full accuracy, you can manually create auxiliary surfaces and objects in the Metaroom Workspace based on your Snapshots.
Pro Tips for scanning complex ceilings with Metaroom Scan App
Use multiple Snapshots from different perspectives to document beams, slopes, recessed lighting, or any unusual ceiling geometry.
In the Metaroom Workspace, use the “Object Creation” tools to draw surfaces or boxes based on those Snapshots. This helps you accurately reconstruct ceiling details in your preferred CAD or lighting design software.
Don’t worry if you forgot to take a Snapshot! Automatically captured Scan Frames can also be extracted from the Scan Path after upload.
