If you scanned a staircase with the Metaroom Scan App, you may notice that it is initially represented with only five steps in the 3D model. This is a limitation of the Apple RoomPlan API’s default method of displaying stairs.

You can use the AI-assisted element creation feature in the Metaroom Workspace to fully reconstruct your staircase with the correct number of steps.
Before you start: make sure you captured enough Snapshots of each step during scanning — these are essential for reconstructing the staircase accurately. See How do I scan a staircase with the Metaroom Scan App? for guidance on capturing staircases.
How can I reconstruct staircase steps in the Metaroom Workspace?
Follow these steps to reconstruct a staircase in your 3D room model:
- Open your scanned 3D model in the Metaroom Workspace.
- Find the Snapshot of the first staircase step — either in the Model Tree or by clicking the Snapshot icon in the 3D model view.
- The Frame Interaction sidebar will display the Snapshot image.
- In the Frame Interaction sidebar, select Box as the geometry mode.
- Click on the staircase step in the Snapshot to create a selection frame around it. The instance segmentation system will outline the detected area.
- Refine the selection if needed:
- Hold SHIFT and click to add areas to the selection.
- Hold ALT and click to remove areas from the selection.
- In the Element Name field, enter a name for the step (e.g., “Step 1”). This name will appear in the Model Tree.
- Click Save 3D element to add the step to your 3D model.

9. Confirm the element’s position using the Transform Tool. Adjust if needed, then click ✔ in the Transform Tool toolbar to confirm.
10. Repeat steps 2–9 for each remaining step to fully reconstruct the staircase.

Pro Tip: for the most accurate reconstruction, make sure each step is clearly visible in its Snapshot and that the segmented area precisely follows the step’s boundaries before saving. Watch our webinar to get more insights about scanning and reconstructing staircases with the Metaroom.
