How do I scan large spaces with the Metaroom Scan App? 

The key distinction between a multi-room scan and a large space scan lies in the structure of the space. A large space scan typically involves a vast open area with minimal obstructions such as walls and spans over 150 m². This type of scan demands additional planning to ensure comprehensive results.

Follow these steps to scan a large space with the Metaroom Scan App:

1. Open the Metaroom Scan App on your iPhone Pro or iPad Pro.
2. Before you begin, plan how you will divide the large space into sections, each approximately the size of a single room (about 150-200 m²). This preliminary step is crucial for maintaining manageability and scan quality.
3. Tap the Add Scan button and follow the pre-scan recommendations:
   • Clean your device lens.
   • Close doors and windows in the space.
   • Open curtains and blinds.
   • Move objects apart to help the app detect them individually.
4. Position yourself at the starting point of your first designated section and begin scanning. Move slowly and steadily to accurately capture all the details of the space.
5. Return to your starting position to close the loop, then tap Finish Section.
6. On the review screen, check the captured 3D section model. If any details are missing, tap Rescan to start over. If you’re satisfied and want to continue, tap Add Section.
7. Walk to the next section, following the on-screen instructions. Once you’ve reached a suitable position, tap Start Section to continue your scan.
8. Scan the next section the same way. Once you’ve closed the loop, tap Finish Section. The updated 3D model will appear on the review screen, with the newly added section highlighted in pink.
9. To add another section, tap Add Section and repeat the same process (steps 7–8).
10. Keep adding sections until you’ve covered everything, then tap Finish Scan.
11. Great work! Keep the Metaroom Scan App open while the model uploads to the Metaroom cloud. Depending on the scan size and your internet connection, this usually takes a couple of minutes.
12. Once uploaded, you can access your 3D model from the Metaroom Scan App → Projects, or from Metaroom Workspace → Projects.

Tips for a successful large scan

• Lighting: ensure the space is well-lit to improve the accuracy of the scans.
• Steady pace: move at a consistent speed, allowing the app to capture every detail.
• Overlap areas: slightly overlap the areas between partial scans to help the app merge them more effectively into a single model.

Scan App settings for large spaces

Large Scan Mode: when enabled, Large Scan Mode disables texturing and point cloud capture to free up the computational resources needed for scanning large areas. The data captured in the background remains the same, but the preview model will appear less detailed during scanning. Large Scan Mode also activates automatically once you’ve scanned more than 400 m².

Section History (Beta): this feature is designed as a recovery tool for large scans — a way to go back if something goes wrong mid-scan. Please note that Section History is currently in beta.
