How can I reconstruct a complex ceiling in the Metaroom Workspace?

When you scan a room with a complex ceiling using the Metaroom Scan App, the resulting 3D model is initially a simplified version of the space. While this provides a quick overview, it may not capture sloped surfaces, recessed features, exposed beams, or ceiling-mounted elements with full accuracy.

To help you achieve better details in your project, you can use Metaroom Workspace’s AI-assisted 3D Model Creation tools to reconstruct auxiliary surfaces and boxes using Snapshots taken during scanning.

Important to note: In the Metaroom Workspace, you are creating auxiliary surfaces and boxes that represent key ceiling features. These elements are meant to assist in recreating accurate geometry later in third-party software, for instance, in the Cascados or Dialux. At this time, full ceiling reconstruction (such as complex mesh editing or structural modeling) is not completed inside the Metaroom Workspace alone. Instead, the auxiliary elements you create will serve as a guide or reference when continuing your project in your preferred CAD or lighting design tools.

How can I add custom ceiling surfaces or beams?

Before starting your ceiling reconstruction, make sure you’ve taken Snapshots of any ceiling elements you want to recreate. These Snapshots allow you to extract 3D surfaces or objects from the scan with greater precision.

Follow these steps to reconstruct ceilings in your 3D model:

  1. Open your 3D model in the Metaroom Workspace.
  1. In the Model Tree or directly in the 3D model, locate the Snapshot showing the ceiling area you want to edit.
  1. Click on the Snapshot to open it in the Frame Interaction panel on the right.
  1. In the “Object Creation Mode” menu, select either:
  • Surface – for sloped ceilings, recessed areas, or angled planes;
  • Box – for beams, ceiling-mounted fixtures, or solid shapes.
  1. Click on the ceiling area you want to recreate.
  1. Use the segmentation tools to fine-tune the selected area:
  • Hold SHIFT to add areas to the selection;
  • Hold ALT to remove parts of the selection.
  1. Give your element a clear name, such as “Sloped Ceiling North” or “Ceiling Beam A”. This will appear in the Model Tree.
  1. Click “Save 3D Element” to add the reconstructed object to your 3D model.
  1. Repeat this process for all ceiling surfaces and elements you want to include.

Additional Tips:

  • Take multiple Snapshots of the ceiling from different angles to improve reconstruction accuracy.
  • Use the Scan Path view in the Workspace to find useful frames if you forgot to take a Snapshot during scanning.
  • Use color-coded tags for Snapshots (e.g., red for ceiling, green for beams) to stay organized when reconstructing multiple elements.
  • You can filter Snapshots by tag using the Filter tool to focus on one ceiling area at a time.
